West Canal Street Expansion,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Key Railroad Development, LLC. personnel performed a feasibility study for relocation of a railway corridor and reconstruction/expansion of West Canal Street located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The new rail corridor will allow for the removal of trackage along West Canal Street in the Menomonee Valley between 6th and 25th Streets. With the track removed, West Canal Street will be reconstructed and extended to Miller Baseball Park, creating a major thoroughfare to downtown Milwaukee.

CLIENT BENEFITS
  • Removes rail traffic from West Canal Street resulting in improved traffic safety and reduced delays.
  • Creates the opportunity to develop an additional 30 acres of industrial property in the Menomonee Valley.
  • Creates the opportunity to expand the West Canal Street corridor from Miller Baseball Park to 6th Street providing a major downtown artery as well as a mitigation route for the upcoming Marquette Interchange reconstruction.
FEASIBILITY STUDY
  • Alternate rail corridors were evaluated to provide the most user-friendly, cost effective alignments while being acceptable to the Canadian Pacific Railway.
  • Alternate street extensions were evaluated to provide a major link to downtown Milwaukee.
  • Cost estimates were prepared for the various alternatives.
STAKEHOLDER COORDINATION
  • Personnel worked closely with the project stakeholders to obtain their input/approval on the rail corridor relocation and street extension alignments.
  • Stakeholders included affected property owners, Canadian Pacific Railway, City of Milwaukee, Menomonee Valley Business Association, and WDOT.
